The PGFTU in Jericho begins the implementation of an Agreement with Sindicalistes Solidaris-UGT Catalonia

Jericho – Ali Santrisi. Jericho branch of the PGFTU union proceeded with the implementation of an agreement to establish and operate the Occupational Training Center of the PGFTU in Jericho for the education and training needs of the Palestinian workers -specially youth and women-. The agreement has been signed with the Sindicalistes Solidaris-Unió General dels Treballadors de Catalunya (UGT) and is supported by the Catalan Cooperation and Development Agency -Agència Catalana de Cooperació al Desenvolupament (ACCD).-

Wael Natheef, General Secretary of the PGFTU in Jericho said: "the agreement includes the rehabilitation of our old headquarters building to convert it into a training center for women, workers and institutions, and in its first phase will include training in embroidery, IT as well as English tuition and other languages".

Natheef also said that the European agency has already delivered to the Jericho branch twenty thousand euros, as its first installment, for building rehabilitation and to provide its equipment. The program will include the opening of new branches for the center, in its second year (2011) in the village of Jiftlik and in its third year in the northern Jordan Valley and Cardla, Bardala and Einalbayda. The program is projected for three years and will reach a total amount of around 90 thousand Euros.

He explained that this project is a quantum leap in the history of the Jericho branch which will contribute to the training of trade unionists and workers, making it easier for them to find decent jobs.

Pepe López, from Sindicalistes Solidaris-UGT Catalonia and project coordinator said: cooperation with the union in Jericho came after identification of the needs of the Palestinian workers -both men and women- during a meeting with Wael Natheef last year in Tunisia, on the sidelines of a workshop with international trade unions, which brought a closer relationship and friendship exemplified in a joint agreement between both unions and signed by the General Secretary of the UGT Catalonia and Wael Natheef last April in Barcelona during his attendance and participation at the General Conference of the UGT Catalonia.
